Foil stamping can turn an ordinary print project into a stunning piece of art—when it goes right. But if you've ever peeled off your foil to reveal a patchy, misaligned mess, you know just how frustrating it can be when things go wrong.

Let’s break down the most common foil stamping failures and how to fix (or better yet, avoid) them...
1. Uneven Foil Coverage?
The Problem: Your foil doesn’t adhere evenly—some areas look perfect, while others are faded or missing.
Common Causes:
Inconsistent pressure during stamping
Uneven die surface
Incorrect Foil Type
The Fix:
Ensure your machine is calibrated for even pressure across the entire die.
Check your letters/die for wear or damage; even slight imperfections can lead to spotty results.
Upgrade to a more premium foil that’s compatible with your substrate and temperature settings.
Pro Tip: Always run a test sheet before the final run to check for uniform coverage. You can do this by placing a small piece of card of leather over your product and making a test stamp with foil - the result will give you an indication of what the final result might look like! 2. Experiencing Over-Foiling or Foil Bleed?
The Problem: Foil spreads beyond the intended area, creating a fuzzy or bloated edge.
Common Causes:
Too much pressure
Machine temperature is too hot
Excessively detailed or fine lines
The Fix:
Reduce temperature incrementally to find the sweet spot. (Hot Tip: We recommend 120 degrees!)
Try applying less pressure - we usually describe the process as a fluid motion, with contact between your type and product being only 1-2 seconds or so.
Simplify overly complex designs for better foil transfer, especially on those fine lines or detailed artworks.
3. Foil Not Transferring at All?!
The Problem: You stamp the foil, but nothing sticks.
Common Causes:
Incorrect temperature settings
Wrong type of foil for your substrate
Dirty die or letters
The Fix:
Adjust heat levels gradually—too cold and the foil won’t release, too hot and it may melt the foil (So be careful, this can damage your letters!)
Double-check that you're using the right foil type for paper, card, or leather.
Clean your die and foil to remove any dust or residue that might block adhesion. We have a wide range of Foil Colours to choose from...
4. Are you seeing 'Ghosting' or Double Impressions?
The Problem: You see faint outlines or duplicate impressions of your foil image.
Common Causes:
Die movement during the stamping process
Incorrect setup or improper dwell timing
The Fix:
Ensure your die is mounted securely with proper adhesives or hardware.
Replace any worn or compressed cushioning materials.
Calibrate dwell time to avoid over-pressing or bouncing. Try holding the platen down for only 1-2 seconds, and only try longer timing if your material is textured or stubborn.
Pro Tip: We also have a special Die Holding Attachment for the Foilcraft EZ Pro which may come in handy for those of you printing with multiple dies!

Preventative Maintenance is Key
Foil stamping is equal parts science and art. Consistent maintenance of your dies, foil rolls, and press equipment can make all the difference.
Keep a log of your settings for different jobs and substrates so you can replicate successful results with ease.
Above all, don't be afraid to experiment—just make sure you’re doing it on test sheets, not final prints!
